How Much Does Etsy Actually Take Per Sale?
Etsy is not free to sell on, and the fees add up faster than most sellers expect. When you make a sale, Etsy charges a listing fee, a transaction fee on the full sale amount including shipping, a payment processing fee, and potentially an Offsite Ads fee if they drove the buyer to your shop from an external platform. Combined, these fees typically consume between 9% and 15% of your revenue before you account for your own production costs and shipping labels.
This calculator applies the current 2025 Etsy fee structure to your exact numbers — so you can see your real net profit and margin, not an estimate. Enter your sale price, what you charge for shipping, your actual materials cost, and your shipping label cost to get an accurate picture.
The Four Etsy Fees Every Seller Needs to Know
- Listing fee ($0.20): Charged every time a listing is sold and renewed. This flat fee applies to every transaction regardless of the sale price, which means it has the biggest proportional impact on low-priced items.
- Transaction fee (6.5%): Charged on the total order amount including the shipping price you charge the buyer. This is Etsy's primary revenue from sellers. It applies to the item price plus the shipping charged — not just the item price alone.
- Payment processing fee (3% + $0.25): Charged by Etsy Payments, which is mandatory in most countries. Like the transaction fee, it applies to the full payment amount including shipping. The $0.25 fixed component hits harder on lower-value orders.
- Offsite Ads fee (12% or 15%): Only charged when Etsy advertises your listing externally and the ad leads to a sale. Sellers who earned under $10,000 on Etsy in the past 12 months pay 12% and can opt out. Sellers over $10,000 pay 15% and cannot opt out. This fee applies to the item price only, not shipping.
How to Calculate Etsy Profit Margin
The formula for net profit on an Etsy sale is straightforward once you know all the components. Start with your gross revenue (item price plus shipping charged to buyer), then subtract every cost:
Net Profit = Gross Revenue − Item Cost − Shipping Label Cost − Listing Fee − Transaction Fee − Payment Processing Fee − Offsite Ads Fee (if applicable)
Your profit margin percentage is then: Net Profit ÷ Gross Revenue × 100. A healthy Etsy margin after all fees and costs is typically 20–40%, depending on your product category and material costs.
Example: A $25 Item with $5 Shipping
Gross revenue: $25.00 + $5.00 = $30.00. Listing fee: $0.20. Transaction fee: $30.00 × 6.5% = $1.95. Payment processing: $30.00 × 3% + $0.25 = $1.15. Total Etsy fees: $3.30. If your item costs $8.00 to make and your shipping label costs $4.00, your net profit is $30.00 − $8.00 − $4.00 − $3.30 = $14.70, which is a 49% profit margin. Enable Offsite Ads at 12% and the fee adds another $3.00 (12% of $25), dropping profit to $11.70 and margin to 39%.
